Ontology is the investigation of the cognitive requirements and conceptual space of the notion of Being or existence, or of the inextricable/fundamental classes of that which is extant. Given more specificty, ontology therefore investigates the fundamental or basic composition or structure of entities, the modal relationships among entities whether or not connected to notions of causality, that which is essential to existing or existence, and the relationship between existence or being extant and Being as such.

While reading Chapters I & II of Georges Bataille´s "Erotism: Death and Sensuality," it was rather fascinating how much the material overlapped quite well with the kind of challenge I´ve been trying to make against a memetic theory of cultural evolution. In particular, Bataille seems to at least implicitly share the notion that subjective experience as we know it was birthed in tandem with the arrival of the tool.
